Designed by renowned Sarasota architect Dwight James Baum and built by Owen Burns, it was completed in 1926 and named El Vernona Hotel in honor of Mr. Burn’s wife.  The hotel was built as the premier winter resort hotel of the day, rivaling any others in Southern Florida.  It was designed as an American adaptation of Spanish Architecture and featured a plethora of opulent details such as hand carved and painted wood work, over-sized and detailed doors and trim as well as extensive tiling and plaster work.  No expense was spared where design and style were concerned.

The building was acquired by John Ringling in 1930 who renamed it The John Ringling Hotel.  Ringling put his own spin on the hotel, often inviting his circus performers (who were wintering in Sarasota) to perform aerial and equine acts as entertainment during dinner in the main ballroom.  Originally built as a hotel it was converted to private apartments in the mid 1960’s and then renamed The John Ringling Towers. In the early 1980’s the building was closed and sat vacant until its much contested demolition in 1998.
